Popular Coconut Liqueur Brands
Coconut liqueur offers a tropical twist to cocktails and is loved for its creamy, rich flavor. Here are some of the most popular brands that have made a name for themselves in the world of coconut liqueur.
Malibu
Malibu is perhaps the most famous coconut liqueur brand. Its smooth and sweet flavor makes it a go-to for mixing fruit juices and other rum-based drinks. It’s affordable and widely available, making it a staple in many bars and homes.
Owned by Pernod Ricard, the brand offers a wide variety of flavors, including pineapple and mango, in addition to coconut.
I find it incredibly versatile, whether making a Pina Colada or enjoying a simple mix with cola.
Koko Kanu
Koko Kanu stands out with its authentic and natural coconut flavor. This white rum liqueur combines Jamaican rum and coconut for a rich flavor that’s both bold and smooth. It’s less sweet than Malibu, which makes it a good option for those who prefer a more refined taste.
The brand is known for its quality and has a long history of rum production in Jamaica.
It works beautifully in classic tropical cocktails or even sipped straight over ice.
Aluna Coconut
Aluna Coconut is known for its balanced and subtle flavor. Made with a blend of Guatemala and Caribbean rum, it incorporates natural coconut water, giving it a lighter, less syrupy taste than other coconut liqueurs.
Its lower sugar content makes it a healthier alternative while delivering a rich coconut flavor.
I often use Aluna for cocktails where I don’t want the coconut to overpower other ingredients.

Choosing the Right Coconut Liqueur
When picking a coconut liqueur, consider the flavor profile, price, and mixability. These factors can greatly affect your enjoyment and the versatility of the liqueur.
Flavor Profile
The flavor of coconut liqueur varies significantly between brands. Some offer a sweet, creamy taste with strong coconut notes, while others have a subtle coconut flavor balanced with hints of vanilla or caramel. It’s important to taste different brands to find one that matches your preference.
Brands to consider:
- Malibu: Known for its sweet and smooth coconut taste.
- CocoRibe: Offers a more natural and less sweet coconut flavor.
- Kalani: Focuses on a rich and creamy coconut experience with a hint of spice.
Price Point
Price is another critical aspect. Coconut liqueurs range from budget-friendly options to premium selections. Decide on your budget before shopping.
Price ranges:
| Brand | Price Range |
|---|---|
| Malibu | $15 – $20 per bottle |
| CocoRibe | $20 – $30 per bottle |
| Kalani | $30 – $40 per bottle |
Consider if you need a high-end liqueur for special occasions or a more affordable one for casual drinks.
Mixability
It is essential to see how well the liqueur mixes with other drinks. A good coconut liqueur should easily blend into cocktails without overpowering other flavors. Check the label for mixing suggestions and try a few cocktails to test its versatility.
Mixability tips:
- Malibu: Great for tropical cocktails like piña coladas and daiquiris.
- CocoRibe: Pairs well with rum, vodka, and fruit juices.
- Kalani: Ideal for sipping neat or in creamy cocktails such as coconut martinis.
Knowing these factors can help you pick the best coconut liqueur for your taste and occasion.
